  • Mayor Kevin Johnson, the city's first African-American mayor, was elected in 2008. Prior to be elected mayor, Johnson was a professional basketball player who played 12 seasons in the NBA, 11 of the seasons as a member of the Phoenix Suns.
  • Doris Matsui has represented California's 5th District as a member of the US House of Representatives since 2005. Her husband, the late Bob Matsui preceeded Doris, serving the 5th District for 26 years.
